Always operate tyres within the guidelines of the manufacture and as stipulated on the tyre sidewall.
When I attend races or Trackdays, “What pressure should I run?”, is probably the most common question I have been asked over the years. Frequently the answers surprise people, especially after the internet advice told them different.
Tyres are obviously very important in a car’s performance, yet are frequently overlooked or misunderstood, however with a basic understanding of what is happening where the car meets the road, your track experience can be more fun and less stressful. With that in mind, I have put together this guide to cover some of the basic issues and misconceptions. It is not intended to be a “how to, but to help you to understand what the issues might be.
If I go back to the beginning, the wheel is said to be one of man’s greatest inventions. It certainly preceded sliced bread by quite a bit. The wheel worked fine for many years being pulled and pushed around. It was not until some bright spark decided to put a steam engine in their “waggon” that wheels, rather than just supporting weight and rolling along were required to also grip the ground to provide drive traction. It was not too long after than that Mr Dunlop was off down the Patent Offices with the ancestor of the modern pneumatic tyre we see today.
